 The Citizen Nighthawk is a legend in the world of pilot watches, renowned for its intricate dial, robust Eco-Drive movement, and functional slide rule bezel. But delve a little deeper, and you'll discover that not all Nighthawks are created equal. While sharing a core identity, subtle yet significant differences exist between the models designated for the North American, Asian, and European markets. The Citizen BJ7010-59E is often considered the "classic" Nighthawk for many enthusiasts, particularly outside of North America. Its distinguishing features are primarily aesthetic, yet they make a considerable difference to its overall character. The most immediately striking aspect is the dial. Unlike the North American version (often BJ7000-52E or similar), the BJ7010-59E typically features applied, polished metallic hour markers, rather than the raised, fully-lumed "6" and "12" numerals found on the US model. This gives the European/Asian variant a more refined, dressier feel, with a touch more visual depth. The "Nighthawk" text itself is usually absent from the dial, contributing to a cleaner, less cluttered appearance.



Another key differentiator is the case back. While the North American Nighthawk often features a simpler, flat case back, the BJ7010-59E (and other Asian/European models) frequently boasts a beautifully engraved case back, often depicting a stylized airplane or globe, adding a touch of thematic flair and premium feel. This attention to detail on the back of the watch is a minor but welcome touch for many collectors. Furthermore, the lume on the BJ7010-59E tends to be applied only to the indices and hands, rather than illuminating the entire internal chapter ring as seen on some North American versions, resulting in a more focused glow.



Functionally, all Nighthawk models share the excellent Citizen B877 Eco-Drive movement. This solar-powered quartz caliber is a marvel of practicality, offering impressive accuracy and a substantial power reserve, all while eliminating the need for battery changes. The dual-time display, with its distinctive jet-plane GMT hand, and the internal E6B slide rule bezel (operated by the crown at 8 o'clock) are common across all regional variants, providing robust pilot-specific complications. The 200m water resistance and sturdy stainless steel construction also remain consistent.

In essence, while the North American Nighthawk offers a bolder, more tool-centric aesthetic with its fully lumed numerals and simpler case back, the European and Asian BJ7010-59E caters to those who appreciate a slightly more elegant and detailed execution. It's a testament to Citizen's understanding of diverse market preferences, providing subtle variations on an iconic theme. For many, the clean dial and engraved case back of the BJ7010-59E make it the quintessential Nighthawk, a truly global icon with a discerning regional touch.

Niteye TF-25

     I just received my first light from Niteye .  This is an OEM manufacturer for other well established flashlight companies, such as Jetbeam.  Now they have come out with their own line of flashlights.  This particular model uses 1x18650 rechargeable lithium battery or 2xCR123 lithium batteries.  This light provides about 1 hour at the highest setting of 500 lumens and 50 hours at the lowest setting which is approximately 1 lumen.  It has a large head which accommodates a wide a deep smooth reflector which provides it with good flood and quite decent throw.  The light uses the latest XM-L U2 led which is from Cree and is capable of producing a ton of light from a small package.      I received the light in a nice box which held the light in a foam packing.  The light comes with a nice open style holster where only the head is covered allowing access to the switch.  It also comes with a lanyard ring, n...
